Joseph of Mercury - MVA

Director: Jared Raab
Director of Photography: Conor Fisher

When I first met Joseph, he was living with a mutual friend while recovering from a spinal injury. He had turned his lack of mobility into an excuse to write and record a new batch of music, including the song that would become MVA.

Months later, when we started to talk about videos for the new material, he sat me down and excitedly showed me a folder of images on his laptop. He had recently acquired a CD ROM full of his x-ray and C.T. scans from the hospital where he was treated. Played in sequence, these scans became a ghostly animation and eventually, the basis of the MVA video.

We ended up adding some X-Box Kinect real-time point cloud scans and studio material to stitch the worlds together, but all the medical visuals you see in the video are from that original meeting. Combined with the content of the song, we tried to tease out ideas around recovery, in all the meanings of the word.
